Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

Health promotion encompasses many disciplines (i.e., psychology, sociology, biological and clinical sciences, and business) and many different approaches (i.e., education, community dialog, advocacy, preventive medicine, and environmental improvement). Many people regularly engage in health promotion – such as when an inspector issues a citation to a restaurant, when a public health nurse gives a flu vaccination, when a community resident advocates for safe housing and recreational areas, or when an educator creates a website on Lyme Disease prevention.

This module will outline the basics and specifics of health promotion. It will describe strategies for health promotion and will list the factors and players that are involved. It will also review the steps in planning and implementing interventions for health promotion.
